Two students from University of Lusaka have died while three others sustained serious injuries after the vehicle they were travelling in crashed into a tree in Chongwe this morning. Police say the vehicle was allegedly being driven at excessive speed.
According to Police spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi, the accident happened around 05:00 hours along Chalimbana Road in the Silverest area off Great East Road. The accident involved a Honda Fit registration number BLD 5008 driven by Patrick Musonda, 22, a UNILUS student and resident of Silverest.
Chilabi said the vehicle was travelling from north to south with four passengers on board when the driver allegedly failed to negotiate a curve due to excessive speed, causing the car to lose control and crash into a tree.

He said the impact extensively damaged the front part of the vehicle.
The driver sustained multiple injuries and was rushed to Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital, where he is receiving treatment.
The deceased have been identified as Edify Chikumbi, believed to be between 22 and 26 years old, who was pronounced dead on arrival at Chongwe District Hospital, and Maseka Chilapala, believed to be between 20 and 25 years old, who was pronounced dead on arrival at Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital.
Police said the bodies have since been deposited in the respective hospital mortuaries pending postmortem examinations.
The other injured passengers, Akufuna Mwituna, 21, of Silverest, and John Msenge, are admitted to Levy Mwanawasa University Teaching Hospital with multiple injuries.
All five occupants of the vehicle were identified as UNILUS students. Investigations into the accident are ongoing.
