The United States Government has refuted reports alleging that it has threatened to withhold critical lifesaving healthcare support to Zambia unless it is given access to the country’s critical minerals.
Outgoing U.S. Ambassador to Zambia Michael Gonzales described the reports circulating on social media platforms as false.
Speaking at a farewell reception, Mr Gonzales charged that the allegations leveled against the U.S. government were being peddled by alarmists.
He said the false claims attributed to the U.S. government, alleging threats to withdraw healthcare support for millions of Zambians, are disgusting.
Mr Gonzales clarified that allegations suggesting his government has threatened to withhold critical, lifesaving healthcare support for Zambians who depend on it are baseless.
“Now, I know there have been alarmist allegations recently. But let me be clear, any suggestion that the United States would withhold critical life-saving healthcare support from those Zambians whose lives and health depend on it unless we get critical minerals is disgusting and patently false!” he stated.
The outgoing U.S. Ambassador was reacting to recent media reports alleging that Washington had given Zambia until April 30 to decide whether to make its minerals primarily copper, cobalt, and lithium available to U.S. companies in exchange for health assistance.
Mr Gonzales maintained that the United States’ support to Zambia is longstanding.
“America’s support to Zambia is long-standing. Our goodwill runs through the veins, the hearts, and the dreams of millions of Zambians.
“Our hands remain outstretched in a genuine, transparent offer of true, tangible, and meaningful collaboration for mutual benefit. “ Mr Gonzales said.
He stressed that the U.S. government remains open to genuine collaboration aimed at achieving mutual benefits.
Mr Gonzales assured that his government will continue to honor its longstanding commitment to the Zambian people by providing lifesaving healthcare support.
He stressed that the U.S. government will not leave Zambians without access to antiretroviral (ARV) treatment.
Mr Gonzales instead indicated that his government will redouble healthcare support to Zambia so as to ensure that no babies are born with HIV positive.
“Now, of course the United States will absolutely continue to honor our longstanding commitment to the Zambian people to provide critical life-saving healthcare support.
“We will not leave Zambians without access to ARVs. We are redoubling our support to ensure that babies are not born with HIV,” he assured.
