Kabwe Central Hospital has successfully carried out a complex brain operation on a 40-year-old man injured in a road accident, marking a significant medical milestone for the facility.
The delicate procedure, described as the first of its kind at the hospital in decades, was conducted after a CT scan revealed that the patient required urgent surgery to save his life.
Central Province Medical Officer, Elijah Mutoloki, said the patient who works as a driver was initially taken to Liteta District Hospital with multiple injuries following the accident.
Dr Mutoloki explained that the man sustained a traumatic brain injury along with severe injuries to the head, jaw, and throat, including complex fractures to the frontal skull.
He added that the patient also suffered fractured ribs and a broken femur in the crash, which occurred along the Great North Road in Chibombo District.
At Liteta District Hospital, medical staff conducted initial assessment, treatment, and stabilisation before referring the patient to Kabwe Central Hospital for specialised care.
Dr Mutoloki said the accident happened approximately three weeks ago, and the successful surgery represents a major step forward in expanding surgical capacity at the provincial hospital.
