Lumezi Town Council says it has procured 11,000 school desks since 2022 under the Constituency Development Fund (CDF), as part of a broader effort to improve learning conditions across the district.
Council Chairperson Oliver Mwale said the initiative forms part of a five-year target to supply 18,000 desks to schools, aimed at addressing longstanding shortages in classroom furniture.
Mr Mwale added that an additional 3,000 desks are scheduled for procurement this year, signalling continued investment in the education sector through the CDF.
He said the increased availability of desks has already begun to transform the classroom environment, making it more conducive for both teaching and learning.
At Chikoma Community School, Headteacher Peter Nyirenda described the intervention as critical. He said that before the desks were delivered, many pupils were forced to sit on the floor, while others relied on improvised seating arrangements.
Despite the progress, Mr Nyirenda appealed for more desks to be allocated to the school, citing growing enrolment and persistent gaps in classroom resources.
A parent, Esinele Banda, also welcomed the development but urged the local authority to sustain the momentum. She called on the council to continue prioritising desk procurement and broader school infrastructure development through the CDF to strengthen the quality of education in the area.
