Outgoing Matero Member of Parliament Miles Sampa has announced he will not seek re-election in the constituency, highlighting significant infrastructure and social development achieved since 2011.
In a farewell message to residents issued on May 12, Mr Sampa reflected on what he described as a transformation of Matero from a largely underdeveloped constituency into a more modern urban area with improved public services and economic activity.
He recalled that when he first assumed office in 2011, most roads were dusty and heavily potholed, healthcare services were limited to small clinics, and the area had only one police station. Markets were largely informal, with traders operating on the ground, while places of worship were predominantly makeshift structures.
Over the years, he said, key roads such as Lumumba, Mungwi and Commonwealth had been upgraded into tarred dual carriageways, improving mobility within the constituency. He also pointed to the construction of the Matero Level One Hospital, which has reduced the need for residents to travel to the University Teaching Hospital for many medical services.
Mr Sampa further noted the development of modern markets, expansion of schools, and the establishment of several colleges and universities, some of which attract international students. Security infrastructure, he added, has also improved with the construction of additional police stations and posts across the constituency.
He said access to basic services has increased significantly, with many households now connected to electricity and running water, alongside improved sanitation facilities. Rising household incomes, he suggested, have also led to increased car ownership and the growth of small and medium-sized businesses.
Among the notable developments cited was the construction of the Heroes National Stadium, described as the largest of its kind in the country, as well as the emergence of malls, lodges and other commercial facilities.
Mr Sampa also highlighted his personal outreach initiatives, including the “Ubuntu” and “Kakudya Sikachepa” programmes, through which he said he supported residents using personal resources and his parliamentary salary.
He expressed gratitude to voters for electing him twice with what he described as some of the highest vote totals recorded by any Member of Parliament in the country.
While stepping down from representing Matero, Mr Sampa indicated that he plans to return to Parliament representing another constituency within Lusaka, which he said will be announced at a later stage.
“It is hard to say goodbye, but all good things come to an end,” he said, adding that he would continue to maintain ties with the constituency.
He urged residents to make what he called a “good choice” in electing their next Member of Parliament in the August 2026 general elections.
