The Northern Province Police Command has called for increased community collaboration in promoting road safety during the launch of a road safety awareness campaign in Kasama District.
Speaking at the event held on 30 April 2026 at Kasama Civic Centre, Northern Division Commanding Officer and Commissioner of Police, Simunji Mulonda, urged members of the public to take an active role in reporting unsafe road practices.
The campaign, held under the theme “Yours and My Road Safety,” brought together traditional leaders, government agencies, and transport stakeholders. Senior Chief Mwamba was represented by Headman Nsunkutu, while senior police officials, including Deputy Commanding Officer Dr Charles Mbita, were also in attendance.
Concerns were raised over the growing number of unlicensed riders and unregistered motorbikes. District Traffic Officer Moola Kufanga highlighted the scale of the issue, while Inspector Banda Precious warned that such motorbikes were increasingly being linked to criminal activity.
A representative from the Road Transport and Safety Agency (RTSA), Jocelyn Tembo, stressed the importance of adhering to road safety regulations. She identified key causes of road accidents as failure to wear helmets, speeding, overloading, and riding under the influence of alcohol.
Stakeholders at the event pledged support towards improving compliance and safety standards. A local stakeholder, Mr Cheweco, committed to sponsoring training for 200 riders, while Mr Peter Sichulima offered additional training support.
Progress figures presented at the event indicated that since January 2024, a total of 528 motorbikes have been fully cleared and registered, while 490 remain pending clearance. In addition, 680 riders have so far been licensed.
The President of the Riders Association of Zambia, Kelvin Mwila Mubanga, said the association would continue working closely with the Zambia Police Service to enhance compliance and improve safety on the roads.
The event concluded with the certification and licensing of 100 trained riders, marking a step forward in efforts to strengthen road safety awareness and enforcement in the district.
