20 Years Old Man, Shoes Phiri Arrested For Assaulting A Dog

A 20-year-old man has been arrested in Eastern Province after an alleged assault over a dog reportedly escalated into a fatal incident.

Police say the suspect, identified as Shoes Phiri, allegedly attacked 29-year-old Lefard Phiri after accusing him of kicking his dog. The incident is reported to have occurred on Saturday while the suspect was walking the animal.

Eastern Province police commanding officer, Robertson Mweemba, said the confrontation turned violent when the suspect allegedly punched Mr Phiri in the face, causing him to fall into a nearby ditch.

Mr Mweemba further stated that the suspect is alleged to have followed the victim into the ditch, where he repeatedly kicked him in the abdomen. The victim sustained facial bruises and internal abdominal injuries.

“Mr Phiri was taken home, and the suspect’s father, John Phiri, was informed of the development,” Mr Mweemba said.

The injured man was later taken to Chanida Clinic for medical attention on the same night. He was subsequently referred to Chadiza District Hospital and later to Chipata Central Hospital, where he received treatment.

However, police confirmed that the victim died on Sunday morning.

Authorities have since taken the suspect into custody, and investigations into the incident are ongoing.
