Information and Media Minister Cornelius Mweetwa has called on journalists to uphold professionalism, independence and ethical standards as Zambia joined the rest of the world in commemorating World Press Freedom Day.
Speaking during commemorations held in Lusaka on Sunday, Mr Mweetwa emphasised the critical role of a free and independent media in promoting national unity, peace and development, particularly as the country approaches the August 13 general elections.
He said the media holds significant influence in shaping Zambia’s future, noting that responsible journalism can help bridge divisions, foster understanding and support sustainable peace.
Mr Mweetwa, however, cautioned journalists against allowing themselves to be used to advance political interests, warning that compromised reporting risks eroding public trust and undermining national stability.
He urged media practitioners to remain steadfast in their duty, prioritise accuracy, and safeguard their editorial independence.
The minister further stressed that Zambia’s peace must be protected at all costs, describing it as a national asset that should not be sacrificed for political gain or personal ambition.
Mr Mweetwa also highlighted government efforts to strengthen the media sector, including the establishment of a Media Trust Fund through the Media Liaison Committee, aimed at improving sustainability particularly for community media organisations.
He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to media freedom, stating that journalists are currently operating in an environment with improved legal protections and minimal interference.
However, he expressed concern over increasing cases of unprofessional conduct within the sector, urging journalists to take a leading role in safeguarding the integrity of the profession by confronting unethical practices and eliminating imposters.
