Three people have died and five others sustained serious injuries in separate road traffic accidents recorded across Lusaka on Saturday, police have said.
Police spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi said the incidents occurred in different parts of the city on 2 May 2026, with investigations now underway.
At around 06:30, Twin Palm Road witnessed a fatal crash in which a 10-year-old boy, Fazili Phiri of Ibex Hill, was struck by a BMW driven by a 38-year-old woman from Meanwood Chamba Valley.
The child sustained fatal head injuries and was pronounced dead on arrival at Bauleni Clinic. His body has since been deposited in the mortuary at University Teaching Hospital, awaiting a postmortem.
Mr Chilabi said preliminary investigations suggest the driver may have turned without due care.
Later in the evening, at about 19:40, another fatal accident occurred along Lumumba Road near Simon Mwewa Market. An unidentified male pedestrian, believed to be between 25 and 30 years old, was hit by a Toyota Dyna truck driven by a 33-year-old woman from Garden House.
“The victim sustained fatal injuries and was pronounced dead upon arrival at UTH,” Mr Chilabi said, adding that the pedestrian was crossing the road at the time. The body remains in the UTH mortuary awaiting identification and postmortem.
A third fatality was recorded around 22:00 along Mungwi Road in the Siyomunji area of Lusaka West, where another unidentified male pedestrian, also estimated to be between 25 and 30 years old, was struck by a Hyundai Santa Fe driven by a 46-year-old woman from Chalala.
Police said the victim died from his injuries after being taken to UTH. The accident occurred as he attempted to cross the road.
Several other serious-injury accidents were also recorded across the city.
In Makeni, a 56-year-old pedestrian was hit by a motorcycle while crossing Kafue Road and is currently admitted to Chawama Level One Hospital.
In Zanimuone, a 17-year-old girl sustained serious injuries in a hit-and-run incident and is receiving treatment at Matero Level One Hospital.
Along Leopards Hill Road, two passengers were seriously injured after a Nissan Tiida collided with a stationary truck. Both are admitted to UTH.
Meanwhile, in Ngwerere, a 38-year-old woman who was standing off the road was hit after a driver allegedly failed to keep to his lane. She is also receiving treatment at Matero Level One Hospital.
Police say several vehicles involved in the accidents have been impounded for mechanical examinations.
Mr Chilabi has urged both motorists and pedestrians to exercise caution, obey traffic regulations and remain vigilant to help prevent further loss of life.
