Zambia National Service (ZNS) has moved in to commence urgent road rehabilitation in Northern Province, starting with the Chambeshi ring road in Mungwi district, following a directive from its commander.
Northern Province’s dilapidated road infrastructure is receiving an emergency response, as ZNS Commander Lieutenant General Maliti Solochi has ordered the immediate deployment of ZNS personnel to begin road rehabilitation works across the region.
The intervention, announced during Lt Gen Solochi’s courtesy call to the provincial minister’s office, is aimed at addressing the worsening state of road networks, which local councils have struggled to maintain.
Lt Gen Solochi assured the Northern Province leadership of ZNS’s readiness to swing into action, confirming that the Chambeshi ring road in Mungwi will be the first project under the emergency initiative.
“The command is ready to work with the constituencies through the Provincial Administration. We have the expertise, and we are moving in immediately,” he said.
He further outlined ZNS’s broader commitment to infrastructure development, food security, and water investment, all in line with the presidential directive to fast-track national development.
The Commander emphasized that this operation will also serve to reassign ZNS officers to value adding roles in agriculture and construction, enhancing the return on public investments.
Northern Province Minister Leonard Mbao welcomed the move, calling it a timely intervention in the face of a mounting infrastructure crisis.
“The CDF is available, and many councils have equipment, but we face serious backlogs. We need the capacity ZNS brings to get the job done quickly and properly,” Mbao noted.
He revealed that multiple feeder roads in the province remain in disrepair, while a key bridge linking Nsama and Kaputa districts has collapsed completely cutting off farmers from essential markets.
